Inviting Readers to the Party: Expanding the Definition of News

by amy at 4:43 PM

Today, Rich was on KQED-FM's "Forum with Michael Krasny", discussing innovations in local news with fellow guests Michael Maness from Gannett and Dan Gillmor, director of the Center for Citizen Media. They have an interesting exchange.

Dan comments that innovations with citizen media are "happening more quickly than I expected and less quickly than I would have hoped." Michael shares examples of how Gannett is "turning over tools that have been internal only," to leverage the contributions of readers in investigative stories. And Rich talks about how Topix has moved from a "read-only model, to one where people can make a more interactive contribution to their community online."

We also welcomed our 1,000th editor to the party. Here are some great examples of editors-in-action from Overland, MO to Okeechobee, FL; from Springfield, VT to Springfield, MO.
